International dance festival CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva announces an open call for emerging choreographers to take part in the annual Competition for Young Choreographers

The international festival CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva has a history as a welcoming environment where emerging talents of contemporary choreography are nurtured. Vladimir Varnava, Konstantin Keykhel, Lilia Burdinskaya, and Konstantin Semenov are among those who started their choreographic paths at the festival and continue their promising careers at the international stage: their names appear among jury members of leading theatre awards, and their works are included into repertoires of major musical theatres in Russia and abroad. The winner of the first competition – Vladimir Varnava – received an invitation from a renowned French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot to work with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Currently, Vladimir is composing a ballet Yaroslavna in the Mariinsky Theatre and a new production for the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre that is going to be premiered at the International Diaghilev Festival in 2017.

Every year the Competition is a key event for the CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva festival – in spring, when the festival starts accepting applications, the Competition becomes a platform for showcasing the contemporary choreography in all its diversity. The Competition invites students of dance schools from all over Russia and those emerging choreographers who already have some experience behind their back. In autumn the finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their works at the Festival and present them to the general audience in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and the panel of jury – maîtres of contemporary choreography. Since the beginning of the Festival more than 20 talented choreographers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kiev and Yerevan presented their works to and received feedback from Diana Vishneva, Hans van Manen, Viacheslav Samodurov, Alexey Miroshnichenko, Samuel Wuersten, and Mats Ek. The winner of the Competition will receive a grant to undertake an internship in a leading foreign dance company.

“The competition for young choreographers is not a place where you are criticized, your work is evaluated, and strict judges pronounce you guilty. Here is the place where you can share your experience, think outside the box and exercise your talent. The idea behind the competition is to have a creative lab where emerging choreographers and those who are only starting to accumulate new experience and knowledge, could create and showcase their works, bring their ideas to life. We would like to give everyone a chance to believe in themselves, expand their creativity, and receive constructive feedback and advice from distinguished choreographers. Even if you don’t become a finalist this year, you will still become part of our team and can try once again next year” – Anastasia Yatsenko, Curator of the competition of young choreographers.
